It's amazing how much can happen in a matter of 10 days! :)
Last weekend I made my way down to Xian (famous for the Terracotta warriors). I had the opportunity to meet Angela, my childhood friend from Melbourne, and her family there and do some touristy stuff while I was at it!
So Sunday night after teaching during the day Kasey (my housemate) and I hopped on a train and departed for Xian. We booked tickets for a sleeper train and opted for a hard sleeper - a not so comfortable bunk standing THREE high and open to anyone who passed by which meant us being foreigners, we were the local attraction. But it turns out hard sleepers aren't so bad at all as long as you get the bottom bunk and have good neighbours…i.e. don't snore, don't sit on your bed, don't yell instead of talking, don't smoke and don't sit there and eat seeds out of their husks (the most annoying crunching sound in the world!! They could do it all day!). We at least got half of the above. We had great, nice neighbours and the noisy, smoking men kept down the hall!
The journey to Xian was 16 hours!!! But in that time you spend the night, so sleep takes up a good part and lights go out at ten so you really have no choice but to sleep!!
We also had a tonne of reading material and my trusty old brick breaker game on my phone! Passes away the hours! Haha!
In the morning we got served dumplings for brekky! The yummiest dumplings I have had so far in China and spent the few hours we had left being excited for Xian.
As soon as we arrived, Ang and her entourage were waiting with their private tour guide to take us to the Warriors and a few other nooks and crannys in Xian. Oh, also the remains of a 6000 year old village that is now a museum. It was amazing! All of it was drenched in history and to see the Terracotta Warriors up close was a very surreal experience. To think that an Emperor actually commissioned these things for his afterlife….and that they were discovered by a mere farmer digging a well!
That night we hit the town for dinner which consisted of a plate of broccoli (random) and amazing dumplings ….oh and some Baskin and Robbins ice-cream for a bit of home!! We then tried to find a bar and ended up at a backpackers where the bartenders were more than happy to serve us coronas, pronounced 'saronas' and practise their english, take photos of us and giggle at everything we said. Then came along Jimbeam….the hostel manager who has seriously named himself Jimbeam. He entertained us for the rest of the night until we had finished our Saronas and were ready to hit the hay. We spent the night crashed in Ang's hotel room with her and I sharing a single and Kasey on the floor. Just like good old days with Ang!! We still aren't too old to share a single bed!!
The next day Kasey and I let the others go on their tours while we did the two hour bike ride around the city walls! (one of the only cities to have their original walls still standing). And ride around the city getting lost in the Muslim quarter! With markets and street food for lunch, we were happy to be living it up in Xian. We took a risk and trialled some street food which consisted of some gloopy stew/soup that you tore chunks of bread into and ate. It was delicious. We were just praying it wouldn't disagree with us as we had a long ride home on the train that night. We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering through the markets in the Muslim quarter. They were amazing. Anything you wanted you could buy. But boy we realised quick smart that in order to buy anything you had to spend more energy haggling than you did in Yuan. By the end we were exhausted but we got out alive and with some good bargains. We started paying more money towards the end because our energy was down! Haha! The starting price would always be so ridiculous and you would say your price and they would just laugh at you but in the end you would always get it! I even had one guy go lower than my original price. Amazing!!
The train ride back was HELL!! We were stupid enough not to purchase a sleeper bed and just ride in a seat! I will never do that again! Cramped up in little chinese seats with the lights on and everyone making noise all night was not the best train ride home..needless to say it left me tired and irritable and the next day wasn't so amazing. We made it to Beijing and the forbidden city. Which wasn't exactly what I expected. Just and expanse of temples and cobblestones in the middle of the city. But the history is amazing and I am glad I got to see it for sure! Stupid me misread the time on our return home tickets so we missed our train back and I had to reschedule my class….not good. Also Ang was going to come back and check out Cangzhou and meet my kiddies but that plan fell to pieces with the missing of the train. SAD!! But all is good! We learnt a lot of lessons about travelling in China and will make for a better journey next time. I am willing to bet that China is going to be one of the most frustrating countries to be a tourist in. Lucky I am part local and have some know how on the situation.
The rest of the week has been a whirlwind of craziness. Kasey attempted the same conversation with my boss that I did but it turned out a lot worse. I got given her classes to teach and right now she is packing her backs and off to the great unknown. She has had a lot of job offers so something will work out for her but I am sad to lose my one western friend in Cangzhou!! :( The up side is I will have somewhere to visit in China!! So now my teaching load has increased, which I am happy about and my boss can now afford to pay the two teachers she has instead of struggling to pay three!!
Uni starts this week coming. I am doing a full time and a half load which will keep me very busy indeed! But I will love the feeling of getting my brain working again and getting into uni. Give me two months, I will be complaining about it again! :)
I am off to Hangzhou this weekend coming to see my friend I made in Prague. It has been a long time coming and we are both super excited. Hangzhou is supposed to be the most beautiful city in China so I am very excited to see it.
Anyway, Love to you All!!!

It's just you and me China.....
Wow! What a week! So many crazy things. I was supposed to go to Beijing to hang out for a couple of days but guess what?? I got sick! Yes, I swear I am allergic to China….I keep getting sick and new things pop up every day! Right now I am contending with these new eczema like spots randomly around and Lucas Paw Paw oinment has become my new best friend! I think I am going to have to buy it wholesale from Aus!! Not sure wether I am just still getting used to the sensory assault on my body or this is just how it's going to be! It's all good! I am still alive!
The last week and a half has been a lot of bike riding and market perusing, park hopping and attempts at Western cooking with Chinese ingredients! So far I have managed Spag Bol, Chicken Curry and Omelettes (probably more chinese)…and it's been fun and mostly successful. Kasey did a trip to Beijing and she found a western restaurant. So coffee, mozzarella cheese, hot sauce and bacon were on the agenda and so Kasey has been whipping up some American style breakfasts…prob not as healthy they should be…but a nice change from my porridge! Oh, and my porridge is because I couldn't bear to eat Chinese food for brekky as well! Oh, and there is no cereal! There is bread….but no toaster!
But the food thing has been working out alright! We do ok! We work at nights so dinners are annoying at night so we try and eat during the day and not much at night! But sometimes we forget THAT…so end up eating ridiculous amounts of food at about 10pm cause we are so starved! We are getting used to the routine!
Fruit here is everywhere and in abundance. My big fresh watermelon at the markets cost me a dollar and that has been my fruit of choice this week! There are also tonnes of bananas - a fav!
I hit the gym pretty hard this week - I have been trying to work my way back into it! It is sooooo sad that I am back to lifting piddly weights compared to what I was lifting not long ago! How quickly you forget some of the muscles you used to use!! I did legs yesterday and today I could barely walk, let alone run around with the kids! Haha! It was tragic! But it won't take me long to get back to the tank I was! Haha! I wish! Thanks to bodybuilding.com I have some supplements on the way and it's time to rock and roll!!
This Sunday we leave for Xi'an!! ! A 16 hr train ride! Oh Yay!! I am going down there to meet my girl ANGIE!! YAY! I am so excited to see one of my own here! She is family to me! So it is a very special time! I only just left Sarah in Europe not long ago so I feel I am being spoilt on the visitor part!
We will check out Xi'an - the terracotta warriors etc and then head back to Beijing for the day! Then Ang will come back with me to meet my Wed class (who are ADORABLE) and hang with me in Cangzhou so she can get a taste of the real China…not just the tourist trail! So can't wait!
Then next on the Agenda is Hangzhou where my girl Martha is! I met Martha in Prague while doing my TEFL and became super good friends! We rendezvous at the end of May. Also another very long train ride but all good! I am excited to see her and see Hangzhou! It is apparently beautiful! They call in Heaven on Earth and is supposed to be China's most beautiful city. I can't wait to see it for myself!
China is such a contradiction everywhere you go! From one street with all the glitz and glamour and large western like shopping centres…you can turn the corner and are met by carts of street food, dirty old little huts and cookers and chairs and tables with stray dogs sniffing around. It is a complete assault on your senses and you wonder how you went from one extreme to another so quickly!
In the supermarket you can pay some ridiculous price for apples and then walk outside to buy the same, if not better quality for a fraction of the price!
The women seem so composed with complete decorum and then the next minute someone is hawking up a generous amount of spit to deposit on the ground!
I live in this fairly nice high rise apartment. Not really thinking it's anything different to anyone else…but then I ride my bike around the corner on the way to the gym and there is community after community of rabbit warren style houses that are derelict and falling down. It is amazing how much contrast happens right in front of your eyes! But that's what makes it so fascinating.
It's also amazing that all the things I perceived about China or new are now either completely false or now my 100% reality. Just before I left I was researching the One Child Policy known as the Birth Control Policy. It shocked me to the core just reading about it. But now I see how real it is and how it's just normal here. I have one adult one to one lesson each week! She is a nurse in a hospital. She has one daughter my age and another son about 6 years old. She asked me the other day what I thought about the birth control policy here in China. All I could say was it made me sad. Already I have heard stories of forced abortions because they can't afford to pay the fine. But then I have also heard stories of people evading it. However, Julie can't tell anyone at her work that she has two children. How sad is that. She can't even be openly proud of the achievements of BOTH her children. Only one. But then, if you have friends in high places in Government here, you are able to easily avoid paying the fine and have another child. It is crazy! It comes down to who you know and what favours you can call in just to have a child. It was a revelation to Julie that we had the choice to have as many children as we wanted in Australia and that our government even paid us as an incentive to do so. How this world is so diverse.
This week I had a couple of complications with work and my contract etc. How different doing business is in China. It is all fine now. But a confidential email that I sent to head office in Shanghai was immediately sent to my boss without any consultation with me. I thought to myself, if that happened in Australia and the HR department breached confidentiality there would be hell to pay and a nice law suit to follow. It's amazing what they can get away with and what they think is professional. My business dealings have so far been very far from unprofessional. But I do feel like I have been looked after and I do trust my boss so I know it will work out. We are all just about protecting number one where we come from, no one else will do it for you! But China doesn't seem to see it that way….mmm….maybe a slight shadow from a previous China looming there somewhere!
But it's all good!
I have a couple of trips planned….amazing friends to see….study soon to kick in to keep me well enough occupied…and soon enough an amazing trip to India which I am so looking forward to.
Life is good!
As I ride my bicycle around each day and immerse myself in the Chinese culture I am thankful for the opportunity to be doing what I dreamed of doing. There will always be hiccups! But we all know that a few tricks always make the hiccups go away!
Love to you all! All the way from China!

Chopsticks with Fries Anyone??
Ah, life in China! I am really starting to feel at home weirdly enough! Despite the ridiculous amount of attention and feeling like a celebrity. I am starting to feel at home in Cangzhou and enjoying the very different lifestyle I lead! It has been a week of language barrier frustrations (cause I am getting out on my own more) and just bliss at being in an absolute foreign country where I am just cruising doing my thing and getting a lot of attention for doing it! Haha!
The other day we decided to do some PR at a local primary school. We hopped on our bikes and rode down to the school to hand out flyers to the mobs of little Chinese children who really just wanted to show of any English skills they had. We even got to see some our students out! It felt just like back home (wodonga) when we used to go work in the schools! It was great! We took a little detour on the way home and went the long way through a park - within the space of one end of the park to another we managed to get a bride who wanted a wedding photo with her, a guy in the bushes with a long lense (paparazzi style) snapping photos of us!
Another day, I had to get to the bank to transfer some cash and the security guy just happened to be using his phone at photo height, trying to subtly take pics! And in class, the upper primary kids try and snap pics of us to send their friends! Its crazy! If we saw a foreign person in Aus - it wouldn't even register that they are foreign! Just another person in our cultural melting pot called Australia! I really am living in China - hardcore, no foreigners in sight China! We were on a bus the other day - we had our bosses son Fan Fan with us to do some errands and use his translating skills. The bus driver had never in his life seen foreign women….so through Fan Fan, who is only 12, was getting his flirt on with us! Poor Fan, he was so embarrassed when he relayed the conversation!
If the week of craziness wasn't enough I joined the gym (on my bosses dollar…I mean Yuan). Today was my first visit! It is an awesome gym - just as good as any of the ones back home if not better. It's brand new. But it is in a shopping centre. Sections of it have windows facing into the mall….so everynow and then I would turn around after a set and a group of teenage boys would be plastered to the window blatantly staring at me working out! Haha! If you had any insecurities about working out…this is definitely not the right place! Also considering you won't find a Chinese female any where near the weights! So I am definitely in for a lot more staring at the gym! But it is definitely worth it! It felt so good to pump so iron again! It has been way too long! I was back in my element! This will surely keep me occupied for the next six months! Bring back my challenge body! Haha!
One of the things that makes me laugh endlessly here is the Chinese equivalent for our 'ummm?'….it sounds something like "ngr" which you can imagine sounds exactly like a very bad, derogatory word that we are not allowed to say - yet they say it every five seconds…."Helen, ngr" hahaha!
The other ones are "jigger jigger" and "holla holla" (but not like we say it). So occassionally my boss will pull out a "Helen…niga niga..holla holla" - Oh man, if they only knew what they were saying! Sooo funny! Kasey, my American pal and I just die laughing and just roll with it!
For those who know about or have experienced my road rage you all know I am bad! Very bad! Well now that I am mobile on my bike….In CHINA! It has become a problem! I very well can't go around yelling at all the crazy Chinese drivers but my goodness they drive me crazy! So I have been internalising it and it is going to come out in a not so pretty way soon! I can feel it! I got sideswiped by a rickshaw the other day! It hurt bad!!! I was so mad! Unfortunately he was electric and I was just on pedals so I had no chance to catch up and give him a serve! Not that it would have meant anything in English anyway! Haha!
They are just nuts! There are no rules…well no logical ones anyway! It's every man for himself and too bad it you can't handle it! I have gotten super agile on my bike! Rolling with the best of them! I have learnt to read the traffic…although sometimes I forget which side of the road the traffic is coming! 24 yrs in Australia will do that to you! And their horns! DRIVE ME CRAZY!! I know there is some sort of logic to the whole horn honking phenomena but it's just wrong! They honk for everything! So I just keep on riding! They are always to busy checking out the white girl and usually slow down or let me through while the stare! Pretty good deal! Haha!
Kasey has decided to have a sleep over at my apartment! Permanently..haha! Our boss enjoys the company of foreigners in her apartment so Kasey hasn't been able to leave! But we managed it. So I could have a house mate for a while! Will be cool, we could try more cooking. We have been trying our hand at eating out and trying to order…it's pretty funny but we have done it successfully for most of the week! We have our favourite restaurant but probably should work on our home cooking!
Although, my three course meal does only cost me less that $5. So good deal! Haha!
Everything is so cheap here - it is crazy! We managed to find a semi-western restaurant the other day just to try it out for size…we got a side of fries and managed to eat them with chopsticks! Haha! I am so happy I used chopsticks before I came here! Let's just say they are all impressed!
I am not sure but I think I may be allergic to China! Every day I wake up and something new is wrong with me! Just little things, to a small bout of food poisoning?? the other day. Eczema, something wrong with my eyes among other things! Crazy! I think my body is consistently trying to expel toxins that I breath in 24 hours a day! I did buy a mask to ride around with the other day! But I hate it! Oh well! :)
Hope you are all enjoying the millions of holidays that everyone in Aus is getting lately! :) Pretty sweet deal!
Looking forward to seeing my Angie girl from Melbs later this month!! YAY!!!
Love to you all!
